Ingredients

  • 250 g red lentils
  • 1 onion
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 piece of fresh ginger of 2 cm
  • 1 ripe tomato
  • 40 g coconut or olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 700 g water
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro to serve

Step-by-step

Choose your robot:
  1. Put the onion, garlic and ginger in the mixing bowl and chop 4 sec/speed 5.
  2. Add the oil and saute 7 min/Varoma/spoon speed.
  3. Add the chopped tomato and all the spices. Saute 3 min/Varoma/spoon speed.
  4. Add the washed red lentils, the water and the salt.
  5. Set 18 min/100C/reverse/spoon speed.
  6. Blend 20 sec/speed 4 for a creamier dal, leaving some texture.
  7. Serve with chopped fresh cilantro on top.

Tips

  • Red lentils break down fast, they do not need soaking.
  • Serve with basmati rice or naan bread.
  • A dash of lime juice at the end adds freshness.
